Why You Shut Down During Conflict (And How to Stay Present)

January 5, 2026

You're in the middle of a conversation. It's getting heated. And suddenly... you're gone.

Not physically. But emotionally. Your brain goes foggy. Your body goes numb. You can't think of words.

This is the Shutdown Artist pattern.

Why You Shut Down

Your nervous system has three responses to threat: fight, flight, or freeze. Shutdown is freeze.

The 3 Body Signals

  1. Numbness - Emotional flatness
  2. Brain Fog - Can't think clearly
  3. Urge to Escape - Want to leave physically or emotionally

The 3-Step Pattern Interrupt

Step 1: Notice the Numbness

Don't fight it. Just observe it.

Step 2: Name It

Say: "I'm starting to shut down right now."

Step 3: Ask to Slow Down

Say: "Can we slow down? I need a minute to stay present."
